Cabin Pressure - DivX Version (Normal Quality), DVD (Good Quality), PDA Version
|
IMDB rating: 3.60 Plot: A fully automated commercial jetliner is prepared to make its maiden voyage. Without an on-flight pilot, the craft relies on satellite linking for its course. But when the plane suddenly deviates from its determined route and establishes a circular pattern over Seattle, it becomes evident that the craft has been hijacked by a disgruntled former airline employee who has hacked into the flight’s computer system from his apartment, somewhere in the United States. Now, a former discredited Navy pilot and an oddball technician must race against the clock to find where the angry employee is, and regain control of the plane before it crashes into the city. |

What is in the masks that drop down in a plane?
I know its a silly question and that they are used to breath into in case of change of cabin pressure but i heard from someone that is you breathe through the mask something in it will make you drowsy and make you unconscious. Does it?
The "someone" who told you that is totally wrong.
If you were flying at 30,000 feet, and the cabin pressure is lost, there is not enough oxygen in the atmosphere at that height for you to live for very long. The masks connect to oxygen generators that will supply oxygen to you.
The last thing that an airline wants is a bunch of comatose, lethargic, non-responsive passengers. When the plane gets on the ground, they want every one to be able to leave the cabin quickly.
Putting something in that air supply would be so, so wrong. On any typical flight, the people range from infants to old people, thin to very heavy - it would be completely impossible to deliver a dosage of this "something" chemical that would not kill someone from an overdose, or cause an allergic reaction in someone.

The mask is connected to an oxygen supply. The masks drop down in the event of a rapid decompression while at altitudes above 10,000 feet where you would need supplemental oxygen to breathe.
Drowsiness and loss of consciousness would be the result of lack of oxygen, not from breathing oxygen through the masks.
Added info: If you’re interested, the FAA and the military have day-long high altitude training programs in which you learn the technical aspects of the physiology of high altitude flight, your personal physical reactions to oxygen deprivation, the equipment used and how it works, and finally actual experience in the high altitude chamber in which you go through a simulated explosive decompression and a mask drill.
I’ve been through two of these trainings, first with the FAA, then in an Air Force chamber. Ordinary citizens can take the training at no cost, just make inquiries to find out when and where. Call the nearest FAA or USAF/USN flight facility. Have fun!

I watched a documentary on what to do in a plane crash and they said it gives you oxygen. The oxygen is to make you actually a bit high! no joke that’s what the doco said! By making you a bit high it relaxes you. There is also the obvious of it giving you oxygen also if there is a problem with the plane.
I think they give you a certain amount so that you don’t get drowsy or unconscious. If they gave you too much than you probably would.
Edit:
Breathing in too much oxygen can make you high and can make you drowsy and or unconscious if you have to much of it. But they give you a certain amount so you won’t! So over breathing is bad, this is from a hyperventilation site, which says what bad things can happen if you over breathe:
