Who are the real pirates? Capitalist imperialists or Somalian plainsmen?
In 1991, the government of Somalia - in the Horn of Africa - collapsed. Its 9 million people have been teetering on starvation ever since - and many of the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country?s food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas.

Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died.

Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the U.N. envoy to Somalia, tells me: ?Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury - you name it.? Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to ?dispose? of cheaply. When I asked Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: ?Nothing. There has been no cleanup, no compensation and no prevention.?

At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia?s seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish stocks by over-exploitation - and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300 million worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other sea life is being stolen every year by vast trawlers illegally sailing into Somalia?s unprotected seas.

The local fishermen have suddenly lost their livelihoods, and they are starving. Mohammed Hussein, a fisherman in the town of Marka 100km south of Mogadishu, told Reuters: ?If nothing is done, there soon won?t be much fish left in our coastal waters.?

This is the context in which the men we are calling ?pirates? have emerged. Everyone agrees they were ordinary Somalian fishermen who at first took speedboats to try to dissuade the dumpers and trawlers, or at least wage a ?tax? on them. They call themselves the Volunteer Coast Guard of Somalia - and it?s not hard to see why.

In a surreal telephone interview, one of the pirate leaders, Sugule Ali, said their motive was ?to stop illegal fishing and dumping in our waters ? We don?t consider ourselves sea bandits. We consider sea bandits [to be] those who illegally fish and dump in our seas and dump waste in our seas and carry weapons in our seas.? William Scott would understand those words.

No, this doesn?t make hostage-taking justifiable, and yes, some are clearly just gangsters - especially those who have held up World Food Program supplies. But the ?pirates? have the overwhelming support of the local population for a reason. The independent Somalian news site WardherNews conducted the best research we have into what ordinary Somalis are thinking - and it found 70 percent ?strongly supported the piracy as a form of national defense of the country?s territorial waters.?

One of the pirate leaders, Sugule Ali, said their motive was ?to stop illegal fishing and dumping in our waters ? We don?t consider ourselves sea bandits. We consider sea bandits [to be] those who illegally fish and dump in our seas and dump waste in our seas and carry weapons in our seas.?

During the revolutionary war in America, George Washington and America?s founding fathers paid pirates to protect America?s territorial waters, because they had no navy or coast guard of their own. Most Americans supported them. Is this so different?

Did we expect starving Somalians to stand passively on their beaches, paddling in our nuclear waste, and watch us snatch their fish to eat in restaurants in London and Paris and Rome? We didn?t act on those crimes - but when some of the fishermen responded by disrupting the transit corridor for 20 percent of the world?s oil supply, we begin to shriek about ?evil.? If we really want to deal with piracy, we need to stop its root cause - our crimes - before we send in the gunboats to root out Somalia?s criminals.

The story of the 2009 war on piracy was best summarized by another pirate, who lived and died in the fourth century BC. He was captured and brought to Alexander the Great, who demanded to know ?what he meant by keeping possession of the sea.? The pirate smiled and responded: ?What you mean by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, while you, who do it with a great fleet, are called emperor.?

Once again, our great imperial fleets sail in today - but who is the robber?

Stephen, that is a false analogy.

You are purposely misrepresenting my point to try to make me look bad. It FAILED.

There is documented proof on everything in the article. There is no connection between the article and 9/11/2001 attacks.
lol @ the people trying to write it off as a rant just because it goes against what the media tells you in the United States.

YOU ARE ONLY GETTING ONE SIDE OF THE STORY IN THE USA
George S. only a drone would say that I am lying and not point out where. Apparently you haven’t been doing enough objective studies. Everything in the article is true.

Recommend Xbox 360 game?
My son’s 19th birthday is this week and I would like to get him an Xbox 360 game. He already has these:

COD 4 Modern Warfare 2
Assassin’s Creed 2
Halo ODST
Left 4 Dead 2
Borderlands
Dragon Age Origins

And, I believe his best friend is getting him BioShock 2 when it releases Feb. 9.

What other new releases are out for Xbox 360 that he may like? Army of Two? Thanks!
Oh, and he has Fear 2 (I played a bit of this one) which we finished.
Ben L. - Thanks for the info. My son does have a console, he has the Xbox 360 Modern Warfare 2 Limited Edition Console (250GB hard-drive) and we also have the basic Xbox 360 console for us old fogies upstairs in the house. :)
Steve - the Army of 2 I am talking about is the new one "The 40th Day" is that the one you are saying is not good? I saw the commercials for it while watching G4 tv channel and it looked pretty good.

Army of Two is bad, unless you constantly have a second person to play along side you. The AI is terrible.

Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 are good choices. ME2 is a new release, while ME1 is a platinum hit.

Cameron | Feb 01, 2010

dont dream of buying army of two, how come he has the games but no console? i would say mass effect 1,2 and gears of war 1, 2 or Skate 2
Ben L | Feb 01, 2010

MASS EFFECT 1 then ME2
Jordan the hobo | Feb 01, 2010

im talking in my experience i got totaly happy when my parents bought me mass efect 2 yesterday also gears of war 2 its great ….fallout 3 might be good too
x-dude | Feb 01, 2010

Mass Effect 2 for sure. You don’t necessarily need to play the first one to keep up with the story.

Army of Two is horrible.

If he likes fighting games, I would recommend getting BlazBlue.

Also, Final Fantasy 13 is being released on the 9th of March. But that’s probably too late. :P Steve | Feb 01, 2010

Kiwi Girl set to marry American Boy!! But….?
Im too disturbed that his second ex wife still bares his surname after getting divorced 5 years ago.

He tells me that this is extremely common in the States and that I should’nt let it worry me. But I cant let it go. My argument is that it morally does not sit well with me. I feel like he is still attached to her. Even though Im secure about the friendship they share. Whats worse is that he’s justifying her reasons for keeping his name after divorce. He says, ’shes the mother to my kids! That allows her to keep carrying my name’.

We live in New Zealand. I have never been to the States and I have never met his family personally but we have developed and continue to maintain deep friendships via the net and phone calls. I will be meeting his entire family and ex wives at our Wedding next year in New Zealand.

I want to know, is what he says common practice amongst divorced Americans? And am I being unreasonble about my concern?
Thank you Obe and Poodie! My fiancee has been married twice before. I have never been married. Thanks for putting my mind at ease. I really didnt believe him when he said it was the American way. I have lots of making up to do when he gets home from work!! Thank you ladies!!!

If there are children, most women keep their ex’s last name not to justify she’s the mother of his kids, but more for the childrens comfort. Divorce is tough enough on the children.

Some get rid of it immediatley. However the majority do not change the name until they remarry.

How many ex wives does he have? You said you’ll be meeting his entire family and ex wives..plural.

Thats how it works here.

Good Luck

obe | Feb 02, 2010

Yes, it’s pretty common, especially if a) they have children together or b) they were married for a long time. She’s under no obligation to change her name. It’s hers now. It’s not like changing a sweater. It’s part of her identity. It may be bothersome to you, but that really has nothing to do with his level of commitment to you. I think you should just let it go, because you can’t change it.

Congrats on your upcoming nuptials. :)

P.S.- The name really is of no consequence. This woman will be a part of your lives forever because of the children, so it’s best to just get along and not pick over details.
Poodie | Feb 02, 2010

Usually when children are involved, women will keep the last name of their ex-husband. My mom’s reason for doing this was because she didn’t want anyone to get confused because mine and my brother’s last name was different than hers.
ellyj15 | Feb 02, 2010

It’s actually fairly common for women to keep their divorced husbands name until they re-marry (if she keeps the name after she re-marries, then that’s weird!!!), especially if they have kids or if she’s in a profession where people know her name. Really, not a big deal here!
blitzcrackunders | Feb 03, 2010

It’s common in every country where there is a tradition of women adopting their husband’s surname upon marriage (in many countries it is not) for women who have children to keep their married name post-divorce.

I’ve met many divorced Kiwi women who have and equally so many women keep their maiden name on marriage. It is a matter of personal choice.

In some US states, however, the wife’s name is automatically changed on marriage and if she wants to retain her maiden name she has to go through a legal process to change back to her maiden name.

Atheists, The sun DOES revolve around the Earth?
The early Church Fathers, such as Augustine and Origen, argued against the heliocentrism of the pagan Greeks before Copernicus’ time.

Paul V, Urban VIII, and Alexander VII) all ratified the statement used in the 22 June 1633 condemnation of Galileo by the Congregation for the Index: "The proposition that the Earth is not the centre of the world and immovable but that it moves, and also with a diurnal motion, is equally absurd and false philosophically and theologically considered at least erroneous in faith "

Alexander VII declared in a Papal Bull that "the Pythagorean doctrine concerning the mobility of the earth and the immobility of the sun is false and altogether incompatible with divine Scripture."

"To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin."

Instantly, life around the globe begins to change dramatically. In Boston, 32 people with pacemakers, all within a 10-block radius, suddenly drop dead. In San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge collapses, sending hundreds of people plunging to their deaths. In London’s Trafalgar Square, flocks of pigeons lose their ability to navigate, flying into panicked crowds, slamming into windshields and causing drivers to lose control of their cars. And in Rome, as thousands of tourists watch helplessly, an electrical superstorm reduces the ancient Roman Colosseum to rubble. Scrambling to resolve the crisis, government and military officials call upon geophysicist Dr. Josh Keyes and a team of the world’s most gifted scientists to travel into the earth’s core in a subterranean craft piloted by “terranauts” Major Rebecca “Beck” Childs and Commander Robert Iverson. can somebody tell me that wich processor has more performence? Intel core 2 duo or intel core i3?

That is kind of tough. Core 2 Duo is older Model. The core i3 is a newer model but a smaller one.

For the most part I think the i3 should be able to do everything the core 2 duo does (if the speeds are the same).
airdogspace2 | Feb 05, 2010

definitely intel core i3
?angel? | Feb 05, 2010

i3 by a long shot! They don’t even make drivers for Core 2 duo anymore
But if you don’t mind spending an extra $100-$200
Go with an i7 it’s worth the extra money
Shoultzy* | Feb 05, 2010

Well, it depends on their respective clock speeds.
The intel core 2 duo and the intel core i3 are both dual core cpus but the i3 has only been recently released and has some additional features compared to the core 2 duo (like ddr3 ram support etc etc).

Still, its mostly a matter of what clock speed it has.
Majin | Feb 05, 2010

INtel i3 of course, but if you plan on an intel core2duo better get the quad, I think quad is better than the i3. And the motherboard of i3,i5,i7 are all differnet also memory uses ddr3, so if you get the i3 u have to upgrade motherboard and memory. If you have a core2duo or even a pentium 4 lga775 you can ugrade to quad without changing motherboard

how do i show my daughter the relationship she is starting is wrong?
My daughter is 18 yrs old, when she was 16 she met Ryan and they dated for 6 months and she got pregnant. Ryan was very supportive during the pregnancy but once my granddaughter was born he was inmature, spending a lot of time with his friends and they broke up. He still comes around to visit and such. About a month ago I over heard her telling a friend that she "hooked up" with Ryan at a party. When I asked her what she meant she said they just hung out. Yesterday when I came home from work they were alone in the bedroom, when they came out they looked like they were doing more then just hanging out. When I tried to talk to her about it she said "were friends mom." I don’t want to be the over bearing mother but I can’t have her having sex with a guy that can’t commit to her, How do I get her to see that a relationship like this will only leave her hurt.

like, tell her
BAMM | Feb 06, 2010

if you try to tell her she’s only going to do it more and hide it from you. best thing you can do is make her aware that your not happy with him being in a relationship with her and then stand back. she has to make her own mistakes. then if everything does go wrong be there for her and don’t say i told you so. she’ll figure it out for herself. take care x

hello. i m a 17 year old guy. After reading this, i would like to give some advice from a teenager’s perspective. To be franl, i agree with what u juz said. " not to be the overbearing mother". No kids will like the mother to be over authoritative with such "private matters". However, u shld make your stand that you do not allow them to do any intimate or whatsoever acts. Say it in a manner which can instill some form of guilt conscience, not just saying it plainly. For instance, you can say that when i see you hanging with "Ryan or other guys" not APPROPriately, it will HURT mi. emphasize on the "being hurt" feelings. If she cares about u as a mom, she will somehow feel a sense of remorse.

After that u can show that studies is crucial to both Hers and RYANS" future and for the "BABY?" like most parents will do..
STRESS on the part that u feel distress and feel hurt by the presence of RYAN in the Bedroom
If i were you, i will directly speak to RYAN concerning the disturbing matters and ask him to keep the chat between u and him a secret from your daughter. There is a probablity that he will tell your daughter. Again, instill a sense of guilt feeling in him. By saying that if he tells your daughter about tthe secret, ur daughter will hate u. dis is wat can i advise. Pardon my poor, weak english.
Lee | Feb 06, 2010

I tend to agree with Sinner & Saint’s answer. Your best bet is to tell HER what you’ve told us, and then let her make her own mistakes. She’s an adult, and you can’t tell her who she can or can’t have sex with. She’ll have to learn a few more lessons on her own, and you would do well to be there for her whatever the outcome, and not to beat her over the head with her mistakes.

Spiritually speaking Do you like this song?
Oh little town of Bethlehem
Looks like another silent night
Above your deep and dreamless sleep
A giant star lights up the sky
And while you’re lying in the dark
There shines an everlasting light
For the King has left His throne
And is sleeping in a manger tonight

Oh Bethlehem, what you have missed while you were sleeping
For God became a man
And stepped into your world today
Oh Bethlehem, you will go down in history
As a city with no room for its King
While you were sleeping
While you were sleeping

Oh little town of Jerusalem
Looks like another silent night
The Father gave His only Son
The Way, the Truth, the Life had come
But there was no room for Him in the world He came to save

Jerusalem, what you have missed while you were sleeping
The Savior of the world is dying on your cross today
Jerusalem, you will go down in history
As a city with no room for its King
While you were sleeping
While you were sleeping

United States of America
Looks like another silent night
As we’re sung to sleep by philosophies
That save the trees and kill the children
And while we’re lying in the dark
There’s a shout heard ‘cross the eastern sky
For the Bridegroom has returned
And has carried His bride away in the night

America, what will we miss while we are sleeping
Will Jesus come again
And leave us slumbering where we lay
America, will we go down in history
As a nation with no room for its King
Will we be sleeping
Will we be sleeping

United States of America
Looks like another silent night

I see the word.

The world is full of Atheist lies,
Confusion on every hand;
God’s word is twisted and denied,
Just as the homosexuals have planned.

Gay marriage, prostitutes in the street,
By the communists liberals they are easily led;
Trampeling God’s Truth under their feet,
Persecuting Christians instead.

So take prayer out of our schools,
Murder babies, let men marry a man,
Destroy your souls, ignore the moral rules,
For you Satan has a Plan.

God’s word is True, He says what He means,
And those who Obey Him are wise;
Reject God’s word and it’s plainly seen,
He’ll let you believe Satan’s lies!

If you are a born again Christian copy and paste this all over the internet! It is our duty to defeat Satan’s lies with the TRUTH!

"As we’re sung to sleep by philosophies

When are the ignorant fundies going to realise that the trees are the lungs of the planet. No trees, no oxygen.

Gahhhh! their stupidity is so frustrating!

I prefer

All things dull and ugly,
All creatures short and squat,
All things rude and nasty,
The Lord God made the lot.

Each little snake that poisons,
Each little wasp that stings,
He made their brutish venom.
He made their horrid wings.

All things sick and cancerous,
All evil great and small,
All things foul and dangerous,
The Lord God made them all.

Each nasty little hornet,
Each beastly little squid–
Who made the spiky urchin?
Who made the sharks? He did!

All things scabbed and ulcerous,
All pox both great and small,
Putrid, foul and gangrenous,
The Lord God made them all.
