From San Jose CA, is the sun current setting slightly more north or south over the period of one week?
I know the sun sets in the West and rises in the East. However, if you are observing the sun set over a period of a week, I know it doesn’t set at the same point each night…which direction is it going?

Here is what I found on my own: It moves with the seasons. It rises and sets farther north in June and farther South in December. And the difference is 47 degrees or more (depending on your latitude on Earth), which is quite large actually.

MY QUESTION IS WHAT IS IT CURRENTLY DOING IN FEB.

It is relatively easy to track the position where the sun sets (if you have time and a fixed location you can use with a good horizon).

Using this trick, older northern civilizations used to do that, and mark the direction of the southernmost sunset (December 21 in our modern calendar) with lines of rock (henges and leys).

Stonehenge is an elaborate version of such a device. There are simpler henges in various places in Great Britain and in the northwest portion of Europe.

In theory, the places with the greatest swing over a year would be on the polar circles. On the Arctic circle, on December 21, the Sun would barely rise then (almost immediately) set.

The direction of sunset would be barely a few degrees from due south.

On June 21, the Sun would go down, look like it is going to set, then barely "kiss" the horizon before rising again. Therefore, the sun "sets" almost due north on that date.
