What is the best way to get a job on a cruise ship?
I am a sophomore in college and have thought about what I want to do with my life and it just hit me, after cruising on Carnival Cruise Line I have found that I enjoy life on the sea. I love traveling and take every chance I get at it, I like working with people, I am outgoing and like meeting new people. I am majoring in communications at my school currently. I have worked in a dining hall for 2 years and at a local retail store for close to 4 years now. I am currently 19 turning 20 in april.

I am just looking for advice on where to start and what positions are best to start in.

Please and thank you! :)

Go to their website. I’m sure they have a ‘careers’ or ‘jobs’ link. Just be aware, the reason the majorty of employees on those ships are not from the US is because wages and benefits are low, compared to what most people can make in the US. They work months at a time without ‘vacation’ time to go home…and many days without a day off. They aren’t bound by US labor laws.

I talked to a number of staff (esp wait persons) when I’ve been on cruises. They were up early to start serving in the restaurants or on the decks (cocktail bars) and then at dinner time and late night, they were working the restaurants and lounges. No such thing as just an 8-hr work day.

It would depend on what area you wanted to go into. If you were interested in being a cruise director or working with them, you might not have the poor hours (and lower wages) that the wait staff gets. Overall though, you just don’t see many people working those ships from countries that are known for decent wages and labor laws. Most of their employees are from countries that are poor and so working for the cruise line in less-than-ideal conditions is still better than what they could get in their own country.

You might look up cruise line reviews regarding employment. You may find some people think one line is better to work for than another line. Don’t just set yourself on only Carnival because you took a trip with them and had fun. The guests are supposed to have fun…that doesn’t mean the employees are.

I hate to be a barrer of bad news but it helps to be from another country. You having been on Carnival probably didn’t see even one american working on that ship did you? They just don’t hire americans. Sometimes the little shops will have an american but not likely to get into housekeeping or food service. Wages are generally low as the other poster said, but make no mistake, they make big bucks with the tips. I’ve talked with many of them about that. Good luck!
