Clear and Present Danger

Clear and Present Danger
Clear and Present Danger (1994)

IMDB rating: 6.70

Plot: Based upon the Tom Clancy novel of the same name, Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst, is thrust right in the middle of a power struggle within the Colombian drug cartel after one of the President’s “life long” friends is murdered, apparently in retaliation for stealing money as part of a money laundering scheme for the cartel. Jack is then appointed acting Deputy Director of Intelligence, CIA, upon the terminal illness of Admiral James Greer, former DDI, and quickly gets in over his head due to his political naivete. The situation rapidly deteriorates when some of the presidents men convince the President to conduct covert actions against the cartel, in direct violation of congress. Felix Cortez, the security chief of Ernesto Escobeda, the “victim” of the missing money, is one of the cartel boss’s. Cortez tries to play both sides, appearing to inform Escobeda about the CIA’s involvement in the covert operations against him, while trying to orchestrate a coup to take over the cartel, with Cortez as it’s sole boss. James Cutter, the President’s National Security Advisor, makes his own deal with Cortez, with the Presidents knowledge, and halts communications to the covert troops still in Colombia, through the Deputy Director of Operations, CIA, Robert Ritter. Ryan ends up going to Colombia to rescue the covet ops troops with the help of field agent John Clark, but not before some fence mending between the two, being that Ritter blamed Ryan for the comm outage, with Clark’s men subsequently being captured by Cortez’s mercenaries.

>Do you know how 5 of these song titles can fit into a funny little story, just 4 the pure fun ot it?
Your story should not be limited to just these sentences.
Have fun, friends.

1. Consuming Passions
2. Clear and Present Danger
3. You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger
4. If You Could Read My Mind
5. Rumor Has It
6. I Go To Extremes
7. Secret Agent Man
8. Got My Mojo Working
9. Venus and Mars Are Alright Tonight
10. Stop! In The Name Of Love

My consuming passions were for a secret agent man-surrounded by mystery. That’s exactly what I asked for from the genie that came out of the old lamp. The genie replied, "I’ll have him for you in a jiffy! I go to extremes!" Well, something sure got lost in the translation. Apparently, my genie thought I had asked him to bring me a sacred aging man surrounded by history. He brought me a little old prophet with a group of ghosts of long dead historical figures. I said, "Oh, if you could read my mind!" He replied, "Hold on there, Missy! I got my mojo working." After a terribly long, noisy, and awfully off-tune chant, the ancient man said, "I’ve consulted my spirit guides who said that rumor has it you will meet a tall, dark stranger." I breathed a sigh of relief and thought maybe, just maybe, I’d finally get my wish. Soon, I heard someone knocking at my door and sensed a clear and present danger. I cautiously opened the door only to find that the sacred aging man had bad hearing, apparently, and had misunderstood the spirit guides. Standing before me was a small park ranger. I yelled to the genie, "I want my 2 OTHER wishes!" The genie shook his head as he floated away and said, "You’ve already HAD 3 chances-take what you get!" I began to wail and the small park ranger pulled his gun and yelled up at the ceiling to the genie, "Stop! In the name of love!" Suddenly, I realized how cute he was and said, "Hi, my name is Venus." He replied, "The name’s Mars…James Mars." I heard the voice of the giggling genie, "It looks like Venus and Mars are alright tonight!" Ah…not quite the spy who loved me but…close. Sort of.

Where to find selling price of major screenplays?
Hey so I’m writing a paper on the career of screenwriting and for part of my essay I need to talk about the selling prices of different major works. So does anyone know of a website that list major screenplays with the price that they sold for? I’m talking like Finding Nemo, Dark Night, Catwoman, Ice Age. Pretty well known names.

Thanks if you can help.

Try www.gointothestory.com it’s got some good info for research. This page may be a place for you to start:

 http://www.gointothestory.com/2009/01/sp ec-script-sales-analysis-2008-big.html

NOTES:

- Screenplay sales prices aren’t a ‘closely guarded secret’ at all. Read the papers. Read Variety. Watch the sites. Sales prices are listed all the time.

- The WGA lists minimums, not the actual selling prices. Those are determined by writers, agents and production companies.

- NONE of the "issue" has anything to do with all that nonsense about the number of writers involved. When a screenplay is sold, it’s SOLD. THAT’S the selling price. What the production company does with the screenplay after that is irrelevant to the selling price of the work. Duh.

- There’s absolutely NO ‘rule of thumb’ when it comes to screenplay sales prices. And it’s idiotic to say "guild minimum plus 2% of the shooting budget; screenplays - especially spec screenplays - aren’t negotiated with ANY type of shooting budget present.

Screenplay selling prices are a pretty closely held secret these days but you could try IMBD.com and there is always the WGA website, which lists the guild minimums for a variety of projects.

Part of the issue is that on most Hollywood films there are more than just the one writer involved, most times, they’re even uncredited. Which means, you might sell a screenplay for $250,000 but they will bring in a few more writers to take passes at the project and may throw in another fifty to a hundred thousand per writer (closer to the $100G mark I’d think).

However, a good rule of thumb is, the guild minimum plus 2% of the shooting budget.

I’m a professional screenwriter.
