why is my cat suddenly mean?
my cat is an indoor/outdoor cat and is usually very nice and calm. the other day, however, my dad was petting him (and he was very calm) when all of the sudden, the cat attacked him. he threw him off the chair and threw the newspaper at him. i thought it was just a random occurence, but then today he walked into my room and arched his back, and hissed at me. He was moaning and groaning and looked like he was about kill me (like in suspiria haha). i didnt do anything. he walked into MY room.
im kinda afraid of him now!
please help! what can i do?!?!?!
ANY time there is a change in behavior is reason to take the cat to the vet. Sudden aggression can signal pain, or an illness. Cats do develop brain tumors. But there are other illnesses that can cause a normally friendly cat to become mean.
I would recommend bloodwork first of all. A full chemistry panel with a CBC (Complete Blood Count), a thyroid panel, and possibly x-rays to look for masses or heart enlargement.
Also, have you noticed any outside cats hanging around your house? Does your cat see them? If so, you may be seeing Redirected Aggression. When a cat can’t attack the thing that is bothering it, it will take that aggression out on whatever is closest to it. And that could be you. If you see your cat hissing and looking scary, take a towel and toss it in his general direction. Do not throw it at him. He will then direct his attention to the towel and attack it. Once his aggression is gone, he should be fine.

Take it to the vet. Change in behavior such as mean behaviors could be a result of pain or an injury. Sometimes an animal will misbehave if it is in pain because of an illness or injury. If you take your cat to the vet the doctor will diagnose this change in behavior. It could be very serious or it can be very minor from it not liking something or someone in the house to diseases.

To be honest, if its an indoor/outdoor cat, I think that its most likely, that it saw something that it didnt like, or that freaked him out. I dont think it really wants to scare you, I think that it has been scared. Try to comfort it, with slow petting, and buy some treats and toys. Let it know that you wont hurt it. Also, try to keep him inside for a little while, maybe about 2 weeks.
Also, it could have gotten hurt outside, if its not scared, than I think that its a sign of injury and you need to take it to the vet ASAP!

Indoor/Outdoor cats run the risk of rabies. If you can, pin it down with a towel, check it for scratch/ bite marks, make sure your arms and stuff are well protected too. also, my father was attacked by a normally great kitty, turned out it had a brain tumor. A vet visit should be first on your list, then keep it indoors.

Hi Audrey,
Animals become vicious as a natural response to pain. It is like when you are ill and grumpy so end up yelling at people and losing your temper. Cats can’t shout so this is his way of telling you he is not well and is not in the mood.
Take him to the vets as soon as you can.
(And your dad throwing a newspaper at him probably didn’t help, especially if he is hurt.)
Good luck,

The sudden aggression is a sign something is wrong. He could have picked up a parasite, had a head trauma, have hyperthyroidism or has intestinal problems. In order to determine what caused the change, your cat must be taken to a vet.

FUNNNNNY!!! "Paws from Hell" (jk), ummm maybe someone in the house pissed him off and he’s just trying to show off..Sometimes when cats get into outside they stay angry until they release their anger by defeating their opponents. So untill he either finds that cat and wins he’l be making your lives a living hell..Otherwise what you can do is pick him up and love him and talk to him and tell him that you love him.. Or fight with him back but make sure he wins.(note): put on some thick gloves.. He just has to relase his anger that’s all!!!
