Everyone, do you think the USA spends too much on Military?
First, this is not a low-blow attempt. It is not anti-American b.s. Alternatively, if you don’t like foreigners asking questions about USA, then just ignore my question and move on.
If the USA has such a big deficit, why do they still spend so much on Military? More than the top 10 runner ups combined. I am sure a lot of those military assets are wasted.
For example; why does one need 10 aircraft carriers when 3 will do? Why does one need 10000 battle tanks, when only 100 are actually used?
Obviously my examples are conjured up, but you get my point.
Is spending 2 or 3 times more then the top 3 runner up nations enough?
Constructive comments, questions, suggestions, all welcome. Just nothing racist please.

Also, why does a bankrupt nation like Greece spend $7.323B??? Who’s going to attack them?
It’s stupid
Very interesting responses! It’s nice to hear the views of insiders rather than just the usual "bashers"….
I’m reading these comments as they come in.
?TTC#1?
Relax there, I haven’t said anything negative about USA, why are you getting all defensive?
I have not said anything b.s. so far I think.
RE: We never left
You know what, I noticed my error. I posted data from
"Budgets 2006 for NATO countries in billions of US dollars"

MY MISTAKE! I AM SORRY!!! My question doesn’t have a hidden agenda!! DAMN IT!
I don’t think we (US) spends enough on the military. The military personnel need higher pay. The benefits/pay is not great like alot of people think.

I don’t think we spend nearly too much on military. The service members have jobs to do… they will have to complete those jobs regardless of how old their equipment is, what state their quarters are in, and how much hazard pay they receive. Quite frankly, I am all about providing them the best conditions.
I think the problem with military spending is overpaying for equipment. Vehicle manufacturers hear that the government is looking for a contract, so they jack their prices up 500%. The government needs to learn to shop around for the best deals so they can pay a fraction of the current costs for equipment of the same quality.

The largest cost of our military is for personnel. We pay our military well and give them lots of benefits. We are also the technological leaders, this costs money. Call me crazy, but I never want to be in 2nd place when it comes to the military.
Also, many other countries can spend less because we spend so much. Our allies on that list (UK, France, Germany, Italy, etc) know they can spend so little because they know if they ever get in trouble, we will be there to help (one of the reasons for the 10 carriers). So if we cut our spending, then others would increase theirs.
I’m good with our spending. Sure, there is abuse and fraud we could fix to lower the amount somewhat, but I like being #1.

Do you work? What do you do with your money? Do you only work long enough to eat for the day, or for the rest of the week? Do you save any? Honestly, the US doesn’t spend enough. As a foreigner you have no idea what is actually behind those numbers. Weapons actually cost very little. It is the cost of the people that currently use (troops and support people) and have used those weapons. A huge portion of our defense budget goeas to pensions for those who have servedinour military. Additionally, it goes to pay for the healthcare of those veterans and their familes. It also goes to pay for the fuel used in all of that equipment. Also, since you mentioned equipment, you always need spares. We have a deficit from borrowing money to pay for things needed to take care of YOUR country so that our cost of living remains the same. Add to the fact that our income taxes are some of the lowest in the industrialized world, you can see where the issue lies.
BTW, since you mentioned Greece, maybe the Turks? Maybe Al-Qeida? I could be wrong. Maybe if the world was a nice place, no one need any military, but that’s just not the case.
Edit: since you claim you are from Taiwan, you should be very happy the US spends what it does on the military. If not, your "country" would have been re-absorbed a long time ago by your cousins in mainland China…still threatening that I believe. In fact, if it wasn’t for the US, you wouldn’t even be able to freely express yourself the way you do here in this forum. You should be thankful to the US for your current standard of living. As someone already siad, if the US didn’t spend what it does, those other countries would have to spend more…yours included.

Perhaps it’s because they wish to stay ahead of China(PRC),
A COUNTRY YOU HAVE SO CONVENIENTLY OMITTED FROM YOUR LIST.
China, increasing at about 15% per annum, is "reported" to be spending US$70.3 billion in 2009, but that does not include all the same categories as are reported in the USA’s budget.
"China’s defense spending is by no means transparent. China
