Little Children with Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson and Jackie Earle Haley is the movie for you.
You might like The Lovely Bones which is due out in December at the theater. About a young murdered girl who cannot let go of her family and the effect of her death upon the family. All mixed up in it is the man who committed the murder who still lives in the neighborhood. Could be great!
Do you ever watch older movies like from the 50’s? John Wayne and Jeff Hunter and Natalie Wood star in John Ford’s The Searchers about a family wiped out by Comanches. Wayne and Hunter set out to find the murderers and their kidnapped niece (Wood). Wayne also plans on killing his niece because she wouldn’t be any good for civilized folks any longer. What he is really going to do is not answered until almost the final frame and is one of the most famous scenes in movie history. And it will make you cry, I guarantee. The Searchers is maybe the greatest Western ever made.
There is 1974’s The Conversation in which wire man Gene Hackman bugs the conversation between two young lovers and then becomes afraid that something he hears on the tape may lead to their deaths. What happens is unexpected and scary and is reminiscent of the 70’s when we all thought that Big Brother was listening in to our lives, it being right around the time of Watergate.
One more: 1975’s Chinatown with Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. I know we’re supposed to hate Roman Polanski right now but he is a genius, little doubt. Chinatown is about a private detective’s efforts to get to the bottom of the murder of a man who was in the Water Works Dept of Los Angles. Of course the societal corruption is really about family at its core. Wait for the dialogue: "Who is she?" "She’s my daughter." SLAP. "Who is she?" "She’s my sister." SLAP. "Who is she?" SLAP. SLAP. SLAP. "She’s my sister and my daughter. Understand now?" One of the classic movies ever made.
